Gaining an opponent's sword is the act of closing a line of attack from them.
Difference between Finding and Gaining
The best way to differentiate between finding and gaining is to consider an opponent's options:
- When found, an opponent may
- strike through the find (eg. the "finder" is not paying attention)
- When gained, an opponent may
That is, once gained, an opponent may no longer strike you on the line they were on. The line, then, is said to be "closed".
At Academie Duello, gaining the sword is typically taught as an action done with the body (ie. moving into a forward guard) while finding is done with the arm.
