Italian Prima Guardia
French Prime

A position of the hand and sword with the crossbar vertical and the thumb underneath. This guard is usually high, so the body should be bent forward at the waist.

The first guard is so named because it is the first position the hand can be placed in to guard the body after the sword is drawn from the scabbard. From there, the other four guards follow from the first by 90-degree clockwise rotations of the wrist.
