Interpretation

Simple response

One fencer, having been constrained on the inside, sees an opening over his opponent's arm. In the tempo of that constraining, disengages over the sword and makes a rising reverse cut into that opening, intending to strike his opponent's face.[1]

Basic Play

Sequence

  1. Fencers begin out of measure.
    300px
  2. The agent enters into measure and constrains his opponent's sword on the inside line.
  3. The patient disengages to make a rising reverse cut to the agent's face, over his arm.
    300px
  4. The agent disengages beneath his opponent's sword and thrusts in fourth into the armpit, catching the rising cut on his false edge .
    300px

Key Points

  • The agent's sword must be raised high enough to close the line over his arm.

Patient's Error

  • The patient's goal was to take the tempo of his opponent's constraining, but he used an action that took too long.

Demonstrated Principals

  • What does this play demonstrate from the earlier manuscript. References recommended.

Intelligent Play

Sequence

  2. The agent steps into measure and constrains his opponent's blade on the inside.
  3. The patient raises his sword as though to disengage over and make a rising cut, but this is only a feint.
    300px
  4. The agent attacks in fourth into the armpit.
    300px
  5. The patient parries the thrust
    1. with a direct cut, and follows this cut with a thrust to the chest in fourth; or
      300px
    2. with a reverse cut, and follows this cut with a false-edge cut to the face.
      300px

Key Points

  • The patient is feinting a cut. In order to be convincing, the blade and arm must be brought high enough to offer a clear opening to the opponent.
