Interpretation
Simple response
The victim is attempting to strike his opponent in the chest, through the opening his opponent created by stringering him.
Basic Play
Sequence
- The sequence begins as the agent stringers the patient , in terza, in quarta on the inside line.
- The patient responds in the next tempo by disengaging to the outside to strike the agent in the chest (remaining in terza).
- The agent changes to a low terza while making a passing step, catching the opponent's sword halfway through the disengage, and simultaneously wounding the patient in the throat. To add extra strength to his defense, the agent places his off-hand on the false edge of the sword and presses down.

Key Points
- Timing is of the essence in this play. If the agent reacts too lat eto his opponent's disengage, he may not be able to prevent the opponent from stringering.
- It's vital that the agent make a long pass so as to engage his forte as soon as possible.
- The illustration shows the victim still leaning backwards when he is wounded; this indicates that the play takes place very early in the tempo of the disengage.
Patient's Error
- Making a direct attack when the opponent has not given a tempo, and has his sword in a stronger position, is extremely dangerous.
