Marozzo sword progression

Marozzo lists several progressions through guards in his work Opera Nova.

Progression for the sword alone

  1. Begin in coda longa e stretta.
  2. Cut to cinghiara e stretta.
  3. Cut to guardia alta.
  4. Optionally: cut to sopra di braccio.
  5. Cut to coda longa e alta.
  6. Optionally: cut to sotta di braccio.
  7. Cut to porta di ferro stretta.
  8. Cut to coda longa e desteza.
  9. Cut to guardia di testa.
  10. Cut to guardia d'intrare.
  11. Cut to coda longa e larga.
  12. Cut to becca posa (optionally: alicornu).
  13. Cut to guardia di faccia.
  14. Cut to becca cesa (optionally: alicornu again).

Progression for the two-handed sword

  1. Begin in guardia alta?
  2. Do a mezzo cut to porta di ferro alta.
  3. Continue the cut, with a step, to cinghiara porta di ferro stretta.
  4. Continue the cut to cinghiara porta di ferro larga.
  5. Raise the sword to coda longa e alta.
  6. Turn the sword to cinghiara porta di ferro alta.
  7. Parry with coda longa e stretta.
  8. Thrust with porta di ferro alta.
  9. Step to coda longa e desteza.
  10. Step to coda longa e larga.
  11. Step and cut to porta di ferro stretta.
  12. Continue the cut to guardia di fianco.
  13. Cut to guardia di croce.
  14. Turn to becca cesa.
  15. Cut to guardia d'intrare (no step).
  16. Step and cut to becca posa.
  17. Step wide and cut to guardia d'intrare.
  18. Continue the cut and step to guardia di faccia.
  19. Size the forte of the sword with the right hand, ending in guardia contra armi inhaste (guard against the spear).
