A shield is broad, rigid object designed to provide defense for its wielder by covering the body, or a part of it. Shields vary greatly in shape and size. Some shields were also designed to be used as weapons. Typically, the shield was wielded with one hand or arm so that the other hand could simultaneously wield a sword, but some shields were designed for use in two hands.
