Italian spada da lato

Sidesword refers to a single-handed, straight-bladed sword, used both for dueling and as a sidearm in war by light infantry through the 16th century. It is double-edged and pointed and is fitted with a moderately complex guard, usually with a crossbar, knuckle bow, and rings. The sidesword is usually wielded along with a shield. It is similar to -- in fact a precursor to -- the rapier.

Use of the sidesword is primarily given in the Bolognese school.
