A smallsword is a straight-bladed sword with a simple hilt, usually comprised of a dish-shaped or figure-eight guard, a knucklebow, and a false ricasso. The blade generally had a V-shaped cross section and was edgeless, but the diamond cross section and a sharpened debole (to prevent grasping) were also used.

The sword was common among duellists in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It descended from the rapier and evolved into the epee.
